Just after big name and 11th seed Ana Ivanovic lost her match against Romina Oprandi on the National Tennis Stadium Court on Wednesday morning, Russian superstar Maria Sharapova took to the court for her second round match against the dangerous Sorana Cirstea of Romania. Cirstea, ranked at 29, is a wily competitor who hits the ball just as hard, if not harder, than the Russian and who takes a swing at every ball that comes her way, but it is all very hit and miss as she hits some spectacular winners and has just as many misses by a mile. This was the case today, as the very talented twenty two year old took on Sharapova’s game, but came up short against her much more experienced opponent, with Sharapova winning 6-2 6-2 in an hour and eighteen minutes.
The six foot tall Slovenian Polona Hercog, ranked 90 and who had to qualify for the main draw in this tournament, was first up on the Moon Court against the Russian leftie Ekaterina Makarova, ranked at 20. Makarova, when she brings her best game to court, is hard to beat with a great serve and solid groundies, but on Wednesday morning she really battled against Hercog who got past a tricky first round match against another Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who had to retire with a viral illness at when down 5-7 6-4 3-0. Hercog and Makarova battled each other for ten minutes short of three hours, with Hercog taking the first set at 7-6 (5), Makarova coming back strongly to win the second set 6-3, but again being outplayed in the third, which went to a tiebreaker after she let the Slovenian back into the game from 1-5 down to eventually take the breaker 7-3. Hercog will next take on maria Sharapova in the round three.
