Serena Williams beat Maria Sharapova to win the 2012 WTA Championships in Istanbul, prevailing in straight sets 6-4 6-3.

Williams, who lost to Sharapova at the same event in the 2004 final, managed to eventually lift the trophy in 2009 and today added another win to her vast collection of trophies.

The American was just too strong for the Russian in today’s match, improving her head to head record against Sharapova to 10-2. She has also beaten her in this year’s Olympics final.

Only one break of serve decided the outcome of the first set. After Williams took Sharapova’s serve in the opening game of set two, she never looked back and with some impressive serving and big hitting from the baseline, she celebrated her seventh title of the year. Despite a great summer, Serena will finish the year as world no.3, because she was forced to miss some tournaments at the beginning of the season due to illness.
