With Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova both having won their first two matches at the season end championship in Istanbul and thus qualifying for the semis, the remaining two semi final spots were up for grabs between Agnieszka Radwanska and Sara Errani; and between Vika Azarenka and Li Na, who all won one, lost one.
Second on court on Friday were Agnieszka Radwanska and Sara Errani who proceeded to astound the packed stadium with their versatility of shot selection and court craft in a gruelling three and a half hour match. The first two games went with serve until Errani broke for 2-1 and held to 3-1 before Radwanska came back and levelled at 3-3. Errani then broke again in the 9th game to lead 5-4, but the Pole again levelled and broke for 6-5, which went to a tie breaker when Errani held her serve. The tie break was just as exciting, as Errani led 4-2 and 5-3 before Radwanska came back to 6-6 before Errani sealed the set 8-6 in one hour thirteen minutes. In the second set the Italian led 2-0 before Radwanska broke back to 2-2. Games went to 3-3 when Radwanska broke yet again for 4-3 by Errani did the same, for 4-4. The 9th game lasted over 13 minutes, with 6 deuces and 4 break points against her, but Errani held strong to go ahead 5-4, but Radwanska came back at her for 5-5 and 6-5 and, after one hour eight minutes, served out the set at 7-5. Errani served first in the deciding set, but Radwanska broke immediately and ran up a 3-0 lead before the Italian got on the scoreboard by breaking Radwanska. The Pole then led 4-1, but Errani held for 2-4 and, with Radwanska at 5-2 and serving for the match, she broke for 3-5 and held for 4-5, but could not sustain the impetus and Radwanska served out for game, set and match at 6-4 in an epic encounter which lasted three and a half hours.
Radwanska will next take on Serena Williams to fight for a place in the finals.
