Mayer beats Tomic in first round of Shanghai, Nishikori also wins

German Florian Mayer advanced into the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012 after beating Australian Bernard Tomic 6-4 6-0.

This was the third win for the German against Tomic, who is yet to beat Mayer on the tour. After a fairly tight first set, Tomic didn’t stand a chance in set two and after winning mere 8 points, the encounter was over in just 45 minutes.

The German will play Brit Murray in the second round of the tournament. Murray leads the head to head against Mayer with 1-0.

Also through to round two is the Japan Open 2012 winner and 14th seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, who eliminated China’s Wu Di in straight sets 6-2 6-4, booking a second round clash against American Sam Querrey.

In other first round matches, no.13 seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland overcame Spaniard Albert Ramos after winning two ‘breakers’ 7-6 (1) 7-6 (5) and will play Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan next, who dismissed Argentine Carlos Berlocq 4-6 6-2 6-1.
