In the first match on the Moon Court on day three at the China Open 2012 where play in the first round is to be completed, Germany’s Sabine Lisicki took on the Spanish player Anabel Medina-Garrigues. Liscki, 32 years old, finished the 2011 season at 15 and reached a career high ranking of 12 in May of this year, has since then had an iffy second half of the year in addition to injuries and is now ranked 28. The thirty year old Medina-Garrigues is now ranked 39, having ended last year at 27. The German is known for her heavy ground strokes and determined nature, while the Spaniard is a wily clay court player, with a range of fine all court play. This encounter went to three sests and lasted just under two hours, with Lisicki coming out on top with a 6-3 5-7 6-2 win, mainly due to her superior service (including seven aces) and her ability to convert the higher number of break points.

On court 3 in the second match of the day, Russia’s Elena Vesnina met Austria’s Tamira Paszek in the first of the second round matches. Vesnina showed her continuing form in this match after her good 6-1 6-1 win over Mona Bartel in the first round, again winning in straight sets, but this time it was a real battle. The first set went to a tie breaker which she won 7-5. The second set was much easier and a few breaks saw her through 6-2. End Result 7-6 (5) 6-2. She will next take on the winner of the match between world number one, Victoria Azarenka and   Sabine Lisicki.
