Ana Ivanovic and Patricia Mayr-Achleitner booked their second round spots at Generali Ladies in Linz . Eighth seed Sabine Lisicki is out of the tournament.
Former top-ranked Serbian Ivanovic delivered an expected first round victory against Monica Niculescu of Romania. Second seed Ivanovic, who is still on the hunt for her first WTA title in 2012, gave away a serve in the seventh game of the opener, but did not let her opponent consolidate the break. Niculescu was serving to force a tie-break at 6-5, yet the Serbian stepped up and converted the set point number two to grab the opener.
Three breaks in the opening four games of the following set meant Ivanovic acquired a 3-1 lead. She dropped no more than two points in her remaining three service games and generated a triple match point at 5-3. One rally later she was able to celebrate a 7-5, 6-3 triumph. Her next challenger in Linz is two-time WTA winner Andrea Petkovic of Germany.
A surprise early exit for eighth-seeded German Lisicki, who stumbled against domestic player Mayr-Achleitner. Lisicki was unable to settle into the twenty-six minutes long first set as she dropped three of her service games in a row and wasted all of her three break points. The 159th-ranked Austrian kept her rhythm in the second set too and held her service games without any upsets. In the meantime, she broke Lisicki to love in the fourth game which allowed her to convert her third match point one hour and five minutes of first round tennis. Following her 6-1, 6-3 victory Mayr-Achleitner will be matched-up against Petra Martic in round two.
