First on centre court on Wednesday morning in Beijing was world number 12, Ana Ivanovic, in her third round match against the 26 year old Swiss player, Romina Oprandi, ranked at 69. This is proving to be a good tournament for the Swiss, as she took out the fast improving Ursula Radwanska in the first round and the new kid on the Italian block, Camila Giorgi, in the second, both with a 7-5 6-2 score line. Once again Oprandi came to court will all her weapons in great condition, while Ivanovic had a bad day at the office as she could not find any rhythm, creating ideal conditions for Oprandi to win the higher percentage of service winners and break point conversions to take the match 6-4 6-3 in an hour and ten minutes.
In the first match on the Lotus Court, Jelena Jankovic now ranked 26, was up against Carla Suarez Navarro, ranked 46 but who has been as high as 22 (in 2009). At just five foot four inches tall, Suarez Navarro is one of the shortest players on the tour, but she is pretty fast and, with her clay court pedigree, has a great all court game. Jankovic, who has really battled this season (and in 2011) and is really lacking in confidence and wins, came out strongly in the first set, racing to a 5-2 lead, but the Spaniard clawed her way back into the match to level at 5-5 by saving five match points and went on to take the last two games and the set 7-5. The second set also went Suarez Navarro’s way, 6-4. She will play Marion Bartoli in the quarters.
