Former world no.1 Lleyton Hewitt pulled off an upset as he beat 4th seeded Argentine Juan Monaco in the first round of the 2012 Valencia Open, winning 6-3 6-4 in one hour and 42 minutes.

This is a big blow for Monaco, who is a contender for a spot at the ATP World tour finals showdown in London. The Argentine is currently on the 12th place in the Race to London rankings.

In a match that saw eight breaks of serve, the Australian wild card holder managed to take Monaco’s serve five times alltogether to clinch the victory and set up a second round encounter against Croatian qualifier Ivan Dodig, who ousted German Philipp Kohlschreiber also in straight sets 6-2 7-6 (6).

Also through to the next round is Belgian David Goffin after eliminating Pablo Andujar of Spain in two comfortable sets 6-2 6-2.
