Former world no.2 Tommy Haas came back from a set down to defeat world no.10 Nicolas Almagro in the first round of the 2012 Shanghai Rolex Masters, prevailing 4-6 7-6 (4) 6-2.

The German managed to avert seven out of eight break points against Almagro, who is bidding for his first ever ATP World Tour Finals place. However, with this loss his chances have shrunk to qualify for the London O2 showdown where the best 8 players will get the opportunity to compete.

Haas will meet Spaniard Tommy Robredo in round two, who eliminated Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia 7-6 (4) 6-4.

Elsewhere, Italy’s Andreas Seppi booked his second round ticket after overcoming German qualifier Michael Berrer with a 6-2 7-6 (5) scoreline.
