Top seed Roger Federer booked his place in the third round of the Shanghai Masters 2012 after defeating Chinese qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu 6-3 7-5.
Federer struck in the sixt game of the first set and after converting his first break point of the match, he took a 4-2 lead, keeping it till the end of the set.
Lu seemed a bit shaken at the start of the second set as he offered the Swiss two break point opportunities in the opening game at 15-40 down, but came back strongly and managed to hold in the end. Subsequently, the Chinese player had a break point chance on Federer’s serve, but the Swiss maestro averted it with a crushing ace. Both players kept the crowd entertained with some superb rallies and excellent court coverage. Federer was trailing one game behind until the 11th game, when Lu showed a bit of nervousness and dropped his serve for the second time in the match, handing the Swiss the chance to serve it out. The Fed express didn’t hesitate for a moment and after 1 hour and 20 minutes, he set up a third round encounter against his countryman and good friend Wawrinka.
No.13 seed Stanislas Wawrinka reached round three with a three set victory against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, prevailing 6-4 4-6 6-4.
Also through to the next round is 4th seeded Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic after beating Italy’s Andreas Seppi in straight sets 6-3 6-3. Berdych will play American Sam Querrey next.
