The Czech can’t sustain any pressure on the Djokovic serve and the world number two holds to move to the brink of victory.

Berdych looks to be cruising in this game only for Djokovic to come back to deuce. The Czech contrives to have more issues with the umpire who is doing a good job. Berdych has enough on his plate playing Djokovic and needs to focus. Djokovic continues to push but can’t quite strike a decisive blow and Berdych holds. Time is running out though.

Berdych gets to 30-30 but then puts a backhand pass long and Djokovic goes on to hold. The Serb is two games away from the final.

Berdych holds easily enough, he has got three games to make an impression on the Djokovic serve.

Djokovic holds to love once more; Berdych is yet to get a point off the Djokovic serve in this set. The match may be moving away from him – time to make a stand.

A close let call on a would-be ace irritates Berdych and the game moves to 30-30. Djokovic challenges another potential ace successfully and then Berdych unsuccessfully challenges a point in corner – break point. A great return sets up a pass for the break. Berdych seemed to be close to changing the match dynamic towards the end of the first set forcing Djokovic to assume more defensive positions. The Czech holds his serve at the start of the second.

Tentative serving and agressive returning sees Berdych go 0-30 up. Djokovic mixes it up with an effective body serve and then slams down an ace for 30-30. Djokovic approaches but this time to the Berdych forehand and the ball is slammed back past the serve – break point! A long rally sees Berdych go long and it is deuce. Another error from Berdych and it is set point Djokovic and this time it is taken.

A tough game see some uneven play from both players but Berdych ups the aggression and holds. Can he break again to get back in the set?

Djokovic exudes a zen-like calm to move to set point but then stutters with some errors to hand a break point to Berdych. Berdych get one of the breaks back, was that a blip or has Djokovic’s level dropped?

Djokovic hits a sensational running forehand for 15-15, Berdych seems to think he had the point in the bag and didn’t come in. Second serves are getting punished and at 30-30 Berdych does come in but his volley leaves Djokovic with a pass – break point. Second serve and Berdych nets to hand the double break over. Surely that is the first set to the Serb.

Novak continues to attack his opponent’s backhand and come into the net. An easy hold to love with some imperious play.

–  Djokovic 3-1 Berdych

Berdych opens with his first ace but Djokovic hammers a down the line backhand for 15-15. Berdych being pushed behind the baseline as Djokovic gets a read on the serve but comes through to get his first game.

–  Djokovic 3-0 Berdych

Djokovic overcomes a double fault to consolidate the break with some dynamic serving. Ominous signs for Berdych.

–  Djokovic 2-0 Berdych

Djokovic’s returning skills gets him 0-15 up before Berdych hits a serve forehand one-two to level up. The next two points are shared and it is 30-30, Djokovic goes hard at the Berdych backhand and ends up at the net taking the point with a forehand volley – break point. It’s long from the Czech and Djokovic has the break.

– Berdych meanwhile has beaten Andreas Seppi, Sam Querrey and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Shanghai.

– Djokovic has beaten Grigor Dimitrov, Feliciano Lopez and Tommy Haas to reach this stage and is yet to lose a set.

Djokovic, who outclassed Tommy Haas in today’s quarterfinals with a 6-3 6-3 win, will be strong favourite to win this clash against the Czech player. On the other hand, Berdych has played a very solid tournament so far, booking his SF place with a 6-3 7-6 (4) victory over Frenchman Tsonga.

World no.2 Djokovic dropped only 17 games in his previous 3 matches (he had a first round bye), whereas Berdych had to fight hard for his quarterfinal spot, needing three sets to eliminate American Sam Querrey.

The Serb leads the head to head against Berdych with 9-1, having beaten him in their last match at the Monte Carlo Masters 2012 with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 scoreline.
