Juan Martin del Potro beat Roger Federer in the Swiss Indoors 2012 final in Basel, winning 6-4 6-7 (5) 7-6 (3).
This is the second title in just as many weeks for the Argentine, who has played some superb tennis throughout the whole week. One break of serve proved to be enough for him to wrap up the first set.
The 5 time Basel champion Federer struggled to find his rhythm but despite Del Potro having a break point opportunity at 5-5, the Swiss managed to avert it, with a tiebreak having to decide the outcome of the set. Federer seemed to have changed gears in the ‘breaker’ and after he getting the a mini break to go 2-1 up, he never looked back, taking this final into a third set.
Federer came out stronger at the beginning of the decider, but couldn’t convert any of the 4 break point opportunities he earned himself. After both players held their serves till the end, another tiebreak was inevitable. This time it was the Argentine who managed to keep his composure and with a 7-3 win, he avenged the Olympic semi-final loss to Federer.
