Victoria Azarenka cruised into the Generali Ladies Linz final after beating Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania in two easy sets 6-2 6-1.
World no.1 Azarenka, who has already got 5 titles to her name this year, dropped her very first service game against Begu, but then went on to dominate in every single department, booking a final encounter against Goerges. The Belarusian leads the head to head against the German with 3-1, having beaten Goerges in their last clash at this year’s Indian Wells 6-3 6-1.
Julia Goerges, the 5th seed in the Generali Ladies Linz tournament, WTA’s number 19 and German number 2, faced the Belgian qualifier and surprise semi finalist, 26 year old Kirsten Flipkens, ranked at number 66. It was the German player who came out on top, winning in three sets 1-6 6-2 6-3.
Goerges is known for her slow start in matches, taking time to find her range and begin hitting the balls with ferocious speed; and also for her all out attitude of going for every ball that comes her way. Flipkens is not that well known on the tour, but has a really surprising and very attractive game full of drop shots, angled bunts and slices, as well as a good serve, which makes her a tricky opponent for many of today’s hard hitting baseline players.
In the semi final played on Saturday afternoon in Linz, Flipkens took full advantage of the German’s hit and miss game for all of the first set, taking it 6-1, but Goerges came out firing on all cylinders in the second and third sets, reading the wily Belgian’s game much better, reducing her errors and taking full advantage of the break points offered to her, taking them 6-2 6-3 respectively. She will meet Victoria Azarenka in what promises to be an entertaining final on Sunday afternoon.
