628x471 Azarenka defeats Cornet in first round of Beijing

Top seed Victoria Azrenka defeated Alize Cornet 6-1 6-0 to advance to R2, where she will play Sabine Lisicki.

No. 43-ranked Cornet started the match hitting many winners and going for aggressive play.  She broke world no. 1 Azarenka’s serve in the opening game.  After being broken in her opening service game, Azarenka broke back to love.  On a close shot that hit the line, Azarenka held for 2-1.

Azarenka played her consistent game to get to 0-40 on Cornet’s next service game.  She was getting her racquet on Cornet’s first serves, which gave her a solid advantage.  Azarenka broke to go up 3*-1.  Cornet reached deuce on Azarenka’s next service game, but Azarenka proved too steady as she consolidated her early break.  Azarenka then went up 0-30 on Cornet’s serve.  Azarenka hit a deep BH that drew a long reply from Cornet — that shot earned the top seed 2 BPs.  After a strong return of serve, Azarenka broke to go up a double break in the first set.  She reached SP in her next service game, and took the first set 6-2 off a cross-court BH.
Cornet got broken in her opening service game in the second set, to go 0-1*.  At this point, Azarenka had won six straight games after getting broken in the first game of the first set.  Azarenka went on to break Cornet again, to go up 3*-0 in the second set (after 48 minutes of match play).
The  match followed a similar pattern and Azarenka eventually served for the match at 5*-0.  She won 6-1 6-0.
