Top seed Victoria Azrenka defeated Alize Cornet 6-1 6-0 to advance to R2, where she will play Sabine Lisicki.
No. 43-ranked Cornet started the match hitting many winners and going for aggressive play. She broke world no. 1 Azarenka’s serve in the opening game. After being broken in her opening service game, Azarenka broke back to love. On a close shot that hit the line, Azarenka held for 2-1.
Azarenka played her consistent game to get to 0-40 on Cornet’s next service game. She was getting her racquet on Cornet’s first serves, which gave her a solid advantage. Azarenka broke to go up 3*-1. Cornet reached deuce on Azarenka’s next service game, but Azarenka proved too steady as she consolidated her early break. Azarenka then went up 0-30 on Cornet’s serve. Azarenka hit a deep BH that drew a long reply from Cornet — that shot earned the top seed 2 BPs. After a strong return of serve, Azarenka broke to go up a double break in the first set. She reached SP in her next service game, and took the first set 6-2 off a cross-court BH.
Cornet got broken in her opening service game in the second set, to go 0-1*. At this point, Azarenka had won six straight games after getting broken in the first game of the first set. Azarenka went on to break Cornet again, to go up 3*-0 in the second set (after 48 minutes of match play).
The match followed a similar pattern and Azarenka eventually served for the match at 5*-0. She won 6-1 6-0.
