Top seed Wozniacki as well as unseeded defending champion Martinez Sanchez advanced into the second round, whilst Kirilenko was forced to retire due to injury in the first round of the WTA Korea Open 2012 in Seoul.
Six seeded players survived the first round. Amongst them, top seed Wozniacki progressed in a blink of an eye – she outclassed Ducth Rus with 6-1, 6-2. Fourth seeded Petrova defeated Spaniard Dominguez Lino in straight sets: 6-2, 6-4. Her next opponent, defending champ Martinez Sanchez started the tournament with a convincing victory against Greek qualifier Danilidou: 6-2, 6-3.
Third seed Estonian Kanepi gave away only one game in her clash against domestic player Han: 6-1, 6-0. Sixth-seeded American Lepchenko struggled the second of her encounter with Italian Giorgi as she lost three serves, but still managed to wrap up the match in straight sets: 6-2, 7-6 (1).
Second seed Kirilenko, however, only played ten minutes of her match against wild card holder Lee of Korea. This year’s Roland Garros finalist and the Olympic doubles bronze medalist from Russia was force to retire from the match at 1-1 in the first set after suffering a back injury. Fifth-seeded German Goerges won the opener against Soler-Espinosa of Spain, had a double mini-break advantage in the tie-break of the set two, but the her opponent still managed to turn the match around to steal it with 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
