2nd seed Agnieszka Radwanska survived the oppressive summer heat to defeat former world no. 1 Jelena Jankovic and reach the 4th round of the US Open.  Despite winning in straight sets, this year’s Wimbledon runner up remarked that she had “survived” the match.  In reference to the weather she said, “I was feeling like I was melting there”.

It was Jankovic, however, that melted on court today.  Both known for their rallying ability, the two hit 20+ strokes in a point on 6 different occasions.  In the end it was Radwanska’s consistency that won out over Jankovic’s risk taking.  The 27th ranked Serbian hit far too many unforced errors in her bid to advance to the 4th round.

Radwanska will play the 20th seed Roberta Vinci of Italy for a spot in the quarterfinals.  Vinci rocked the draw a bit my downing 13th seed Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets.  With both players struggling with their ground strokes, Vinci took to the net to gain an upper hand in the match, winning 20 of 25 net points over two sets.

In other 3rd round action, 2011 runner up Serena Williams came through in straight sets and will play either Maria Kirilenko or Andrea Hlavackova in the 4th round.
