Murray is out on court waiting for Cilic before time is called like an impatient Adidas-clad executioner. The final game is a formality and the world number four survives a scare to move ahead to a semi-final against the winner of Tomas Berdych and Roger Federer. Marin Cilic was unable to maintain his intensity while the Scot became stronger the longer the match went on.

Cilic hits long and Murray has two set points… another error from the Croat means Murray takes the second set after coming back from 5-1 down!

Cilic finds the net again and its break point once more, Cilic shuts the door with a service winner only for an unforced error to open it to Murray once more. Cilic can’t find his first serve but pummels Murray off the court with some brutal hitting. A third break point is earned though and this game is becoming more essential for both players as it goes on. Back to deuce after Cilic dominates the rally after a good serve and then its advantage Cilic for the first time. Murray goes wide and Cilic hangs on to his serve.

Big point coming up… Murray missed a forehand and reviews it to no avail. Set point and Cilic’s forehand power sees him through to take the first set.

After so much rain the sky looks clear over New York now. Murray is knocked back by a ferocious drive but its even-stevens as he hits a similar shot into the net. Good defense by Murray but the game goes to deuce as Cilic’s ball striking overwhelms Murray’s movement. Murray drops short and the Croat takes the opportunity break point… second serve and Cilic has the break. Murray throws his racquet to the ground in disgust!

An error from Cilic going for an atomic forehand followed a dump into the net sees him fall 0-30 behind. Murray is in the hunt for a break here and Cilic double faults to give the Scot three break points.
