Tonight’s session at Flushing Meadows was postponed until tomorrow due to steady rain over New York.

In the only two matches that could be finished today, Spaniard Ferrer defeated Frenchman Gasquet in straight sets 7-5  7-6 (2)  6-4 and in the women’s draw, top seed Victoria Azaranka overcame defending champion Sam Stosur after a three set battle, winning 6-1  4-6  7-6 (5).

All the rest of the matches had to be postponed and the organizers will be hoping for the weather to get better tomorrow (although looking at the weather forecast, it doesn’t look very promising)…

The center court encounter between American Roddick and Argentine Del Potro was a long awaited one, with the former world no.1 Roddick announcing his retirement from professional tennis after the US Open. The American started the match with a lot of confidence, breaking Del Potro in the 6th game of the first set to take a 4-2 lead. However, he couldn’t close out the set when serving for it at 5-3, and a tiebreak was to be played. After Roddick held serve and took a 1-0 lead in the ‘breaker’, the rain came down and the tournament officials decided to cancel tonight’s session.
