16th ranked and 14th seeded Italian Roberta Vinci, playing her first match after taking some time off after her quarter final showing at the US Open, had a difficult time on court against the unseeded Czech Barbora Zahlalova Strycova, ranked at 62, when play got underway under the centre court roof at Tokyo’s Ariake Tennis Forest Park. Vinci took the first set 6-4 but at 4-1 in the second, she let Zahlalova Strycova come back at her and eventually take the set 6-4. The third set was just as tight as Vinci ran up a 3-0 lead before letting Zahlalova Strycova into the match again, but managed to battle back to take the decider 7-5.
Serbian former world no.1 Jelena Jankovic came up against the Belgian Yanina Wickmayer. Both unseeded in this tournament and even though the score was 6-3 6-3 to Jankovic, the two fought for over an hour and a half, with decisive break points (four out of five) won by Jankovic being the biggest difference between them.
On other matches on day one, home player Ayumi Morita beat the Romanian Sorana Cirstea in a seesaw match 6-2 3-6 6-2; Petra Martic made a remarkable comeback from 6-0 1-0 down to take out the recently returned from injury, German Andrea Petkovic with a 0-6 6-4 6-3 scoreline; and the 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova got the better of Anabel Medina Garrigues, winning 6-3 7-6 (7-3).
