SEMI FINAL RESULTS IN THE WOMEN’S DOUBLES AT THE US OPEN
After the two biggest threats in the women’s doubles competition at the US Open this year – number one seeds Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond and unseeded Serena and Venus Williams – both lost in the third round, the draw opened up for the other teams.
In the semi finals, Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan and Anabel Madina Garrigues of Spain, seeded 16th, took on the Czech pairing of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, the third seeds who lost in the Wimbledon final to the Williams sisters, who took this match 7-6 (7-2) 6-4. The first set took just over an hour to complete, with the Spanish/Taiwanese team producing some beautiful net play, but in the end the Czech pair’s strong serving and ground strokes made the difference. One break by the Czechs in the second set was all they needed to see them into the finals.
Nuria Llagostera Vives and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain, the 8th seeds, were up against the second seeded Italians, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci. With Errani have the season of her career, having reached the final of the French Open and the semis in this tournament; and playing with her good friend Vinci (whom she defeated in the quarters earlier in the day), their class showed and they played to a relatively easy win, 6-3 6-2.
The final will be played on Sunday, starting at noon, as the curtain raiser for the men’s final.
