There may be more than 70 places between them in the world rankings but Sweden’s Johanna Larson made Italy’s Sara Errani fight all the way in Tokyo. Errani managed to find a break at the right time in the first set and despite the odd wobble, ended up taking it 6-3. However, the second set was a different proposition with neither player giving much away – the result was a forced tiebreak with the Italian ranked no. 6 in the world coming out on top and capturing the match with a 6-3  7-6 (1) scoreline.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber  continued her winning run as expected against  Ayumi Morita of Japan in the second round of Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012. She looked full of confidence against her courageous opponent taking the first set 6-3. Kerber was in full control of her serve and despite a determined push from Morita took the second 6-4 to progress into round three.

World no. 9 Sam Stosur fought her way into the third round after coming back from a set down against Italy’s Francesca Sciavone, winning 4-6  6-2  7-5 in the end.
