6th seeded Tomas Berdych ended American Sam Querrey’s run at the Flushing Meadows as he defeated him 6-7 (6) 6-4 6-3 6-2 in 3 hours and 16 minutes.
With both players holding their serves with confidence at the start of the match, the first set was to be decided in a tiebreak. Querrey managed to secure the crucial last point of the ‘breaker’ and for the Czech, this was his first set loss at this year’s tournament.
However, Berdych picked himself up very quickly as he broke the American’s serve twice in set two to level the encounter at one set apiece.
As the match went on, the Czech seemed to be finding his rhythm more and more. Despite Querrey having 7 break point opportunities in the following two sets, he failed to take any of them. On the contrary, Berdych took his serve on four more occassions to book himself a place in the last 16.
Berdych will get a chance to reach the quarterfinals here at the US Open for the first time in his career. He will play Spaniard Nicolas Almagro next, who defeated American wild card holder Jack Sock 7-6 (3) 6-7 (4) 7-6 (2) 6-1.
