The final tournaments before the start of the US Open which will commence this coming Monday have got underway in Dallas, Texas and New Haven, Connecticut with some of the WTA’s top players in action.

Play in the main draw at the Texas Tennis Open started on Sunday, with the final scheduled for Friday, August 24. The list of star players who will be getting their final match practice in before the year’s last Grand Slam starts, include number one seed Angelique Kerber, losing finalist to Na Li in the Western and Southern Open last Sunday; and former world number one, Jelena Jankovic.

Seeded players who were victorious in their first round matches were number 4, the Belgian wildcard Yanina Wickmeyer after overcoming the British hope, Heather Watson, 6-2 6-4 in an hour and twenty minutes; and number 7, the up and coming South African Chanelle Scheepers who, despite a seemingly easy winning score of 6-0 6-2, spent almost an hour and a half on court for her victory against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.

One seed is already out – number 5 Klara Zakolapova from the Czech Republic, who lost to the resurgent Canadian, Aleksandra Wozniak, 6-9 7-6, with the tie break going her way, 7-2.
