Top seeded Angelique Kerber was in Bojana Jovanovski’s top half of the draw before pulling out of the tournament with a shoulder injury, handing the Serb a wonderful opportunity to go deep into the draw. Jovanovski took full advantage of this windfall and won her first round match against Alexandra Panova of Russia 4-6 6-1 6-1, then ousted Mirjana Lucic in the second round 7-6 6-2, before taking a win against Shuai Peng when the Chinese player had to retire when down 4-6 0-1, also with a shoulder injury.
The second semi final to be played on Thursday at the Texas Open Tennis tournament in Dallas will be between the Italian third seed, Roberta Vinci, who has been quietly making her way through the draw; and the unseeded wildcard, Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia. Vinci took out the Taiwanese player, Su-Wei Hsieh in the first round 6-2 6-2, then won her second round match when her opponent, Polona Hercog of Slovakia had to retire after she lost the first set 6-4. In the quarters Vinci took out the number seven seed, Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa, 6-4 7-6, winning the tie breaker 7-3.
