One of the home crowd’s favourites and hope for the singles title at the 2012 edition of the Rogers Cup being played at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal this year, Aleksandra Wozniak downed formed world number one and 13th seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in just an hour and a half, 6-2 6-3.
Jankovic has really been struggling with her game of late and Wozniak took full advantage of the Serb’s lack of confidence and erratic play. Wozniak only lost her serve once in the entire match, while Jankovic was broken four times and also served six double faults during the two sets.
Another Serb, former world number one and player who is battling with her game – and who lost in second round play on Thursday – was Ana Ivanovic, who crashed out to Italian Roberta Vinci in spectacular fashion, 6-0 6-0.
With the withdrawal through illness of Maria Sharapova and some of the names which could have caused surprises already out of the draw, if Wozniak keeps playing with the confidence and form she has showed so far this week, she has a real chance of going deep into the tournament.
