World no.6 and top seed at the Winston-Salem Open Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced into the third round after a straight sets victory over Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, beating him 6-3 7-6 (3).
The Frenchman, who is appearing at this pre US Open warm-up event for the first time, also managed to overcome Bellucci at this year’s Olympic games in London.
This time around, one break of serve for the Frenchman was sufficient to take a one set lead. Despite the Brazilian raising his game in set two, it was Tsonga, who dominated the ‘breaker’ and set up a third round encounter against Ukrainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky, who defeated Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-2 6-3.
With this win, Tsonga improved his head to head record against Bellucci to 2-0.
Czech no.2 seed Tomas Berdych booked his place in round three as he eliminated Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-3 7-5 in 1 hour and 35 minutes. His serve helped him to dominate today’s match and after firing 15 aces to clinch the victory, he will face Jarkko Nieminen of Finland for a place in the QFs.
In the other second round matches, Latvian qualifier Ernest Gulbis ousted no.12 seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa with a 6-4 7-6 (2) win, Belgian Steve Darcis dismissed 11th seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-2 6-2 and 6th seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain ended Amercian wild card holder Ryan Harrison’s run after beating him 6-4 6-2.
