Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga advanced into the quarterfinals of the Winston-Salem Open on the hardcourts at Wake Forest University after defeating Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-6 (1)  6-4.

With this win, the world no.6 Tsonga improved his head to head against Stakhovsky to 3-0 and will be facing Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the last 8, who overcame Latvia’s Ernest Gulbis in three sets 4-6  6-3  6-2.

No.3 seed and defending champion John Isner needed only one hour and 11 minutes to dismiss Jurgen Melzer of Austria, prevailing with a 6-3  6-4 scoreline.

In a match that was delayed by a couple of hours due to rain, the American served 14 aces and managed to take Melzer’s serve twice to book a QF ticket. This is the first occasion that Isner defeated the Austrian, having lost three times to him before today’s encounter.

Next up for Isner will be Belgian David Goffin, who eliminated Lukasz Kubot after a third set thriller, winning 6-3  1-6  7-6 (5).
