World number 8 Janko Tipsarevic is through to the third round of the Rogers Cup after a 7-6 6-4 win over Russian Mikhail Youzhny. Both players played well in the first set, but it was the Serbian who broke first in the eleventh game to serve for the set at 6-5. However, Youzhny was able to break back in the following game to force a tiebreak, which Tipsarevic won 7-2. The Serb managed to break his opponent when serving to stay in the match at 4-5 and booked his place in the next round. Tipsarevic will now play world no. 15 Marin Cilic of Croatia.
The Croat defeated Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis 7-5 6-3 in 1 hour and 22 minutes to reach the third round. Baghdatis started the match well, breaking Cilic’s serve in the third game, only to get broken in the following game. The 23-year old Cilic waited till the twelfth game before striking again and after taking his opponent’s serve once more, he clinched the set 7-5. The Croat started very well in the second set, breaking the Cyproit’s serve in the second game. Baghdatis didn’t give up and broke back in the sixth game, but Cilic was able to get another break and serve that handed him the victory. Tipsarevic and Cilic will meet for the eighth time. The pevious seven meetings were all on hard courts and the Croat won on six different occasions.
Spanish player Marcel Granollers also booked his place in round three, defeating no.15 seeded German player Florian Mayer in straight sets6-3 6-4. The Spaniard fired 9 aces and won 69% points on serve on his way to win the match in 79 minutes. Granollers needed two breaks in the first set and another one in the second to set up a third round clash against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, who was able to upset Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
