Both semifinal matches at the WTA Cincinnati Open ended with a slightly surprising result.

Li Na defeated Venus Williams to book her place in the Sunday’s final, winning in three sets 7-5  3-6  6-1. The Chinese played a fantastic match, although Venus was experiencing back problems that stopped her from delivering her very best on court. She will be hoping to fully recover for the upcoming US Open that starts in a week.

In the other semis, German Angelique Kerber overcame Petra Kvitova 6-1  2-6  6-4. Despite dropping six consecutive games when leading 6-1  2-1, Kerber managed to regroup and set up a final clash against Li Na.

The Chinese leads the head to head against the German with 4-1, but has yet to win a tournament this year. She appeared in last week’s Montreal final, but Kvitova proved to be too strong for her.
