Russia’s Maria Sharapova moved comfortably through to the second round with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Melinda Czink. The 2006 champion Sharapova took just over an hour to defeat the Hungarian and put up some impressive serving stats, winning 24 of 29 on her first serve to go along with 5 aces.
She will face Lourdes Dominguez Lino after the Spaniard defeated Sesil Karatantcheva in straight sets. After Heather Watson exited earlier in the day to Na Li, Laura Robson ensured there would be a British presence in the second round here with a 6-3 7-6(6) victory over Samantha Crawford. Robson recovered from a break down in the second set to earn a tiebreak which she took after saving set point.
Also through to the next round are Anastasia Rodionova of Australia after defeting American hopeful Julia Cohen 6-3 6-0, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium as she overcame Israel’s Julia Glushko 7-5 6-2 and Chinese Jie Zheng after Virginie Razzano was forced to retire at one set apiece.
