The 2003 champion Andy Roddick moved comfortably to the second round of the 2012 US Open after defeating the 21-years old countryman Rhyne Williams in straight sets 6-3 6-4 6-4.
Williams, who came through the qualifying rounds to the main draw, didn’t stand a chance against the former world no.1. Roddick needed only one break in each set to close out the match in just under two hours. Roddick, who is turning 30 in two days, had some impressive stats as he hit 20 aces, 37 winners and won 90% of first serve points. He praised Williams after the match. “He did it the hard way, he didn’t get a wild card,” Roddick said. “He did a great job. Hopefully we’ll see a lot more of him.” The American, who is defending a quarterfinal from last year, will play with either Argentine Carlos Berlocq or Australian Bernard Tomic next. The American defeated Berlocq in their only previous encounter, but haven never played Tomic before.
Another American player reaching the second round is Sam Querrey, who overcame Taiwanese player Yen-Hsun Lu in four sets 6-7 (4) 6-4 6-4 7-5.
Both players exchanged one break each in the first set, that went into a tiebreak. It was Lu who managed to win the last crucial points, taking the lead in the match. Querrey hit 14 winners and 19 UEs, while Lu hit 15 winners and 20 UEs.
Querrey fought back immediately and after taking his opponent’s serve in the third game of the second set, he never looked back as he closed it out 6-4.
The American stormed to a 5-1 lead in the third set just before dropping his serve and giving Lu a lifeline. However, Querrey regained his focus and taking the set 6-4, he got a step closer from reaching the second round.
The fourth set saw both players holding their serves up to 5-5, but a break for Querrey in the eleventh game helped him serve for the match and eventually close it out with a 7-5 set win. Stats for the last set: Querrey dropped only one point on first serve and Lu dropped two. Both had the perfect score on first serve till the tenth game. Throughout the match, Querrey produced 50 winners and 44 UEs and Lu played 42 winners and 51 UEs.
The American will now move on to play against Spaniard Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo, who defeated Somdev Devvarman in the first round. The only previous encounter between Querrey and Ramirez-Hidalgo was back in 2009 on Newport’s grass and Querrey won in straight sets.
In another match, also an American player, teenager Dennis Novikov, defeated Jerzy Janowicz 6-2 7-6 (6) 3-6 6-3 to join Roddick and Querrey in the second round. German Petzschner also overcame Frenchman Mahut in five sets 1-6 4-6 6-4 7-5 7-6 (3).
