Fifth seed Andy Roddick won the battle of the Americans as he overcame James Blake in two identical sets 7-6 (6)  7-6 (6) to make it to the third round of the Winston-Salem Open.

Blake broke Roddick very early on in the match, but the former world no.1 and US Open Champion managed to fight back and forced a tiebreak, in which he got the upper hand at the end.

The second set wasn’t any easier for Roddick, who had to avert two set points at 4-5 and a ‘breaker’ was needed once more to decide the outcome of the set. Roddick held nerve and winning it with an identical score as in the first set (8-6), he set up a third round encounter against the winner of the match between Steve Darcis and Denis Istomin.

Also through to the third round is Belgian David Goffin after eliminating 10th seeded Serb Viktor Troicki in three sets 3-6  6-4  7-5. Goffin will play Lukasz Kubot or Julien Benneteau next.
