Canadian player Milos Raonic was able to overcome Czech player and fifth seed Tomas Berdych to reach the quarterfinal of the Cincinnati Masters.Raonic needed three sets to win the match in 1 hour and 52 minutes with a 6-4 2-6 6-2 scoreline.
The match began very tight from both players in the first set as they held serve in the first eight games without any player having to face a break point. The 21-year old was then able to take Berdych’s serve in the ninth game to go 5-4 up before serving the first set and give himself a lead in the match. Both players had a good percentage of service points won in the first set, with Raonic winning 77% and Berdych 63%.
Berdych seemed more dominant In the second set than Raonic and was able to win it 6-2 in 35 minutes after breaking the Canadian’s serve twice. The Canadian’s 8 winners and 10 unforced errors were not enough against Berdych’s 4 winnners and 3 unforced errors only. Raonic’s winning serve percentage dropped significantly, winning only half of the points on his serve.
However, the Canadian, who will reach a new career high ranking after the tournament, was able to raise his game in the third and final set as he was able to clinch it 6-2 after breaking Berdych’s serve twice. Raonic was back to his very best serve power as he managed to win 100% of points on first serve and dropped two points only on his second serve. Overall, Raonic fired 20 aces and 33 winners to reach his second Masters quarterfinal, where he will play with Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka. The Swiss, ranked 26 worldwide, defeated Nishikori 6-3 6-3 to reach his first ever quarterfinal in Cincinnati. This will be the first ever encounter between Raonic and Wawrinka.
