Favorites Li Na and Nadia Petrova reach the second round of 2012 US Open. Their next opponents will be Tsurenko and Halep respectively.

Ninth-seeded Li Na finished what she has started before the rain came down and progressed into second round with minimum fuss. Her 20-years old British opponent Heather Watson failed to use a break point in the fourth game, and after dropping two consecutive serves afterwards, the set was all over. Best ranked Chinese player was the first to lose a serve in the second set, but responded immediately with three consecutive breaks, taking the match with a 6-2, 6-3 scoreline.

Nadia Petrova is playing her thirteenth US Open; so far she has not made it past quarterfinal. As expected, she eliminated Slovak born Australian Jarmila Gajdosova in two sets, but it was not an easy victory by any means. Gajdosova gave away a serve early in the match, which has proved to be a crucial moment of the first set. The Australian fought bravely in the second set as well, so its outcome was decided in a tie-break. Nineteenth seed Petrova took advantage of her experience and wrapped up the encounter after hour and forty-free minutes of play: 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Luxembourgian Minella needed three sets to defeat another Australian Rogowska: 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Romanian Halep was better than Czech Benesova in two sets: 7-5, 7-6 (5). She will play Petrova next.
