12th seed Ana Ivanovic made light work of her opponent Sofia Arvidsson, advancing to the 3rd round with a 6-2 6-2 victory.
The 24 year old is coming into the tournament with a 25-15 record for the season. Once ranked no. 1 four years ago, Ivanovic has struggled at times with her consistency. Looking unphased in her first two matches here in New York, she will be looking to advance beyond the 4th round of the tournament, her best result up to date. The Serbian player was comprehensive in her performance today, but may have gotten off the hook in the first set where she conceded 6 break point opportunities to the 51st ranked Arvidsson. Arvidsson was unable to convert on any of them, which led to her opponent taking the 1st set 6-2. Athough the crowd witnessed 6 breaks of serve in the second set, it was Ivanovic who grabbed the majority of them, storming to a 6-2 win. Ivanovic wrapped up the match in just over an hour and will either play Sloane Stephens of the USA or Tatjana Malek of German in the 3rd round. Should she progress, she would not face a seeded player until the QFs.
In the other morning match, Dominika Cibulkova defeated Bojana Jovanovski also in two identical sets 7-6 (3) 7-6 (3) to advance to the 3rd round. The first set couldn’t have been any tighter, with the 13th seeded Cibulkova eventually prevailing in a tiebreaker which gave her the momentum coming into the 2nd set. There was no giving up from Jovanovski, who desperately tried to fight her way back into the match. However, all she managed to achieve was to force a second tiebreak, where the Slovak came out on top once more and booked herself a third round ticket.
14th seed Maria Kirilenko was also a winner in straight sets today, defeating Greta Arn 6-3, 6-2. Setting up a possible 3rd round matchup with Agnieszka Radwanska, Jelena Jankovic won her second round match, also in straight sets.
