Richard Gasquet paves his way into the second round of the 2012 US Open, whereas Tommy Haas stumbles against Ernests Gulbis. Elsewhere, Steve Johnson eliminated compatriot Rajeev Ram.
Thirteenth seed French Gasquet had a slow start, but has recovered after the first set of his first round match against Spaniard Albert Montanes. While six-time ATP tournament winner Gasquet lost two serves in the opening set, he improved on this element later in the match. Montanes was not given any more break point opportunities later on. Gasquet’s 22 aces and 58 winners were among crucial factors that allowed him to advance into the next round with a 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-3 victory.
Gasquet will play the winner of the match between Jurgen Melzer Bradley Klahn next.
21th-seeded Haas was in a good form this summer, but was not able to clear his first hurdle at US Open, world no. 145 Latvian Gulbis. The German veteran could not have wished for a betters start as he dominated the first two sets. Furthermore, he had one break advantage until 3-2 in the third set. Nevertheless, Gulbis was not willing to give up a fight just yet. Not only did he manage to turn around the set, he surprisingly dominated Haas in the following two as well, making a complete comeback. Haas could no longer keep up with rejuvenated Gulbis’s rhythm, whose serve proved to be one of his crucial weapons in the end. The German had to accept a bitter 6-3 6-4 4-6 5-7 3-6 five-set defeat.
Gulbis’s second round challenger will be 245th-ranked Johnson, who won the All-American duel against Ram in three straight sets: 6-3 7-6 (5) 6-3.
