Richard Gasquet and Mardy Fish enter the 2012 Toronto Masters quarterfinals after beating Tomas Berdych and Juan Monaco respectively.
Fourth seed Czech Berdych has reached three Toronto quarterfinals in his career, but was stopped in the third round this year, losing a two-set match against 14th-seeded French Gasquet. Berdych started off on a wrong foot as he gave away two of his serves in the opening stages. He pulled one break back later on, but nonetheless lost the set. 2006 Toronto finalist Gasquet was even more convincing in the second set. He managed to convert two break points and held his serves with ease, finishing off the encounter with a game to love: 6-4, 6-2. His quarterfinal opponent is going to be American Fish.
Last year’s finalist Fish fought a tough battle against eighth seed Argentine Monaco. The latter was better in the first set. He did not offer his opponent any break point opportunities while converting two break points himself. In the second set, the tables have turned: Fish needed twenty-eight minutes and two breaks to equal the score. The decisive third set was a lot tighther, with the score tied until 4-4, when 11th-seeded American struck to take the Argentine’s serve. Monaco had five opportunities to break back in the last game, but ultimately Fish used his first match point to secure a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory after two hours and fifteen minutes of play.
