At the ATP Citi Open in Washington, number one seed Mardy Fish from the USA had to overcome a tricky first game against Germany’s Bjorn Phau, but made it through after a three set win 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. He will now face wildcard entrant from Lithuania Ricardas Berankis who saw off the challenge of France’s Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 7-5.

Belgium’s Xavier Mallise also booked a last sixteen spot with a three set victory over France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The win set up an encounter with sixth seed Jeremy Chardy of France who defeated compatriot Edouard Roger-Vasselin in a hard fought three set match, winning 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Number eight seed Sam Querrey eventually overcame the challenge of Igor Andreev of Russia in a three set game that saw three tie-breaks. Querrey’s 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 win sets up a last sixteen match with Benjamin Becker of Germany who beat wildcard entrant Steve Johnson of the USA 6-4, 6-3.

Others to progress through the first round included qualifier Florent Serra of France who beat Brian Baker of the USA 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Serra will now face number three seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa who comfortably beat Estonia’s Jurgen Zopp 6-3, 6-2.
