Switzerland’s top two players both eased into the 3rd round in Cincinnati following straight-set victories. Vying to retain his world no. 1 status, Roger Federer cruised past Alex Bogomolov Jr. in his opening match at the Western & Southern Open. The four-time winner here took just 1 hour to secure his victory at 6-3 6-2, hitting 31 winners and firing 12 aces. In a post-match interview, the 1st seed said, “I’m very happy. It was a quick match, a good one for me”. Up next for Federer is the 19 year old Bernard Tomic of Australia.
Federer’s compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka has also made it through to the 3rd round with an impressive victory of the Spanish 4th seed David Ferrer. The Spaniard held a convincing 5-1 head-to-head matchup advantage over his opponent, but was outplayed this time. Dominate from the start, Wawrinka remained unbroken on his serve taking the match 6-4, 6-1. The Swiss no. 2 and world no. 26 will play 14th seed Kei Nishikori in the 3rd round.
