Sixth seed at the ATP Cincinnati Open, Juan Martin Del Potro, overcame a tricky looking second round tie to comfortably beat Germany’s Tommy Haas 7-5, 6-2. The Argentine, fresh from securing a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, received a bye in the first round and looked the fresher against his German opponent.
Haas had to come through an epic match against another Argentine in the shape of David Nalbandian, before eventually beating him 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 to set up the tie with Del Potro. However, Haas was not going to be the scourge of Argentina a second time and was knocked out by the sixth seed in straight sets. Del Potro managed to save 4 of the 5 break points he faced and was able to convert 4 of the 7 he gained himself. Del Potro will now face Viktor Troicki of Serbia in the fourth round.
Elsewhere, tenth seed and home favourite Mardy Fish progressed in quick style with a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win against Carlos Berlocq of Argentina. Fish had beaten Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in straight sets in the first round to face Berlocq who had seen off the challenge of Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo. The American’s strong service game was to be the deciding factor in this one-sided match, which lasted less than an hour. He will now face Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in the next round.
