It was straight set victories across the board for world no. 9 del Potro and no. 2 Djokovic. Their wins have set up a rematch of the bronze medal match which took place a few weeks ago in London. Before today, Del Potro had never played his 38th ranked opponent Jeremy Chardy of France, but took little time to warm up. The former US Open winner has climbed back up the rankings after recovering from a long injury and is looking poised to once again content for a grand slam. The Argentine made little work of Chardy, dropping just 5 of his first service points throughout the entire match. His dominance handed him a speedy 6-1, 6-3 victory.World no. 2 Novak Djokovic was the next quarterfinalist to make it to the semis with a straight set win over Marin Cilic.
Like del Potro, Djokovic dominated from the start leaving his 15th ranked opponent little opportunity for recourse. The pair have played 6 times before, with the Serbian coming away with the win each time. Today was no different for the five-time grand slam winner as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Just a few weeks ago in London. del Potro and Djokovic squared off for the bronze medal and saw del Potro gain the upper hand to take home the prize. Compared to last season, Djokovic has not looked as strong while his semifinal opponent appears to be at last hitting his stride. It will be interesting to see how these two fair on the American hardcourts with the US Open just 10 days away.
