The twenty two year old Romanian player, Sorana Cirstea, who turned professional in 2006, is one of the streakiest players on the WTA tour. She is a very talented player who, when on top of her game, lets rip with some wonderful and beautifully executed shots but, on her bad days at the office, she plays well below her current ranking of 38. Ranked a career high 23 in August 2009, Cirstea continues her yo-yo performances with some excellent results against top ranked players, but also losses to rank outsiders whom she should have beaten quite comfortably.

Playing in the first round of the Texas Tennis Open in Dallas on Sunday, the eighth seeded Cirstea came up against the Aussie ranked 100, Jarmila Gajdosova. This match was also a yo-yo affair, with Cirstea racing to a 4-1 lead in the first set before Gajdosova reeled her back in to level at 4-4. Cirstea won the ensuing tie breaker 7-2 and immediately went a break down in the second set, before tightening her game to take the set 6-4 and claim her place in the second round.

Other players to reach the second round were Bojana Jovanovski, a 4-6 6-1 6-1 winner over Alexandra Panova; Alize Cornet, who beat Iveta Benesova 1-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-2; and Arantxa Rus, who overcame Romina Oprandi 7-5 6-4.
