Top seed Victoria Azarenka and Belgian star Kim Clijsters outclassed their opponents and advanced into the second round of 2012 US Open.

Three-time US Open champion Clijsters delivered an expected victory against 16-years old American Victoria Duval. The young debutant will be proud of taking Clijster’s serve and staying on level terms until 3-3 in the first set. After that, Clijsters took full control of the happenings on court and wrapped up the set by winning three consecutive games. The second set was a twenty-three minutes long walk in the park for 23rd-seeded Belgian. Duval put a lot of effort into holding her first service game in the set, but could hardly win a point later on. Clijsters is thus staying in contest after a 6-3, 6-1 victory and is awaiting British Robson in the second round.

Russian Alexandra Panova made it to second round in 2011, but was unlucky with the draw this year as she was facing current no. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the opening round. The match was a one player show with Panova being merely a spectator. She could not get more than five points out of the first set which was over after precisely twenty-one minutes of play. The best 76th-ranked Panova could do in the second set was to avoid being double bagelled in the end. Current Australian Open title holder Azarenka sailed to a 6-0, 6-1 victory and will be facing Belgian Flipkens in her next match.
