Blake fired seven aces on his way to victory against the Spaniard Albert Ramos, prevailing in straight sets 6-4 6-3. Next up for the American will his countryman and no.5 seed Andy Roddick, who had a first round bye. Roddick leads the head to head against Blake with 9-3, having won their last encounter at the 2011 Indian Wells tournament.
Also through to round two is another American Ryan Harrison after overcoming Japan’s Go Soeda with a 6-3 7-5 scoreline. Harrison will meet 6th seeded Spaniard Marcel Grannolers next, who also had a first round bye.
In the other first round matches, Steve Darcis won the battle of the two Belgians after eliminating Xavier Malisse 6-3 6-0, another Belgian David Goffin ousted Nicolas Mahut of France 7-6 (3) 6-1 and Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr. dismissed Malek Jaziri of Tunisia in two straightforward sets 6-2 6-2.
