Serbian Janko Tipsarevic captured his first ATP Title of the year after defeating Argentine Juan Monaco in the Mercedes Cup final in Stuttgart, winning 6-4 5-7 6-3.
World no.8 Tipsarevic was in control of the match from the very beginning, taking the first set and storming to a 4-1 lead in the second, just before the rain came down and there had to be a short interruption of play.
However, things have change around after the players resumed the match, with Monaco stepping up a gear or two to turn the second set in his favour and force a decider.
Both players held their serves until the fifth game of the third set, when Tipsarevic struck first to take Monaco’s serve for a 3-2 lead. Another raind delay caused one more brief interruption of today’s final. Despite the Argentine coming back strong once more and breaking the Serb to level the score at 3-3, the final stages of the match belonged to Tipsarevic, who cruised to a third ATP Title win of his career.
In yesterday’s semis, Tipsarevic eliminated Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-4 2-6 6-4, whilst Monaco booked his place in the final by dismissing Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 3-6 7-5.
