Two Swedish players, Johanna Larsson and Sophia Arvidson, are through to the quarterfinal of the Sony Swedish Open.

Both of them are unseeded – Larsson beat third seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-4  6-4 , while her compatriot Arvidson defeated the young Dutch player Aranxa Rus with a 6-4  7-5 scoreline. Arvidson was the one to take out the tournament’s 4th seed Roberta Vinci of Italy in the first round.

Top seed Sara Errani of Italy had to pull out of the tournament with a shoulder injury. The big hitting German Julia Goerges, seeded second, became the drawcard, but she lost in the second round to Polona Hercog of Slovenia.

The Swedish pair Arvidson/Larsson had a tough match in the first round of the doubles, eventually winning 3-6  6-3  10-4, but are now through to the semifinals after their second round opponents and first seeds Julia Goerges and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova had to pull out due to Goerges’ foot injury.
