Czech Lukas Rosol, who attracted lots of atention after defeating Spaniard Nadal in the second round of Wimbledon a couple of weeks ago, entered the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart with a 6-4 7-5 win over 5th seeded Robin Haase.
Rosol showed off his big serve once again as he fired 12 aces against the Dutch on his way to victory, setting up a second round match against German Bjorn Phau, who defeated Austrian qualifier Martin Fisher 6-3 6-3.
Also through to the next round is another German Dustin Brown after overcoming former world no.3 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia in three tight sets 7-5 3-6 7-6 (7).
Brown turned around the match in spectacular fashion as he managed to come back from 5-3 down in the third set, saving one matchpoint and another four break points when serving at 5-5.
The German wild card holder will play Frenchman Benoit Paire next, who eliminated Argetine lucky loser Eduardo Schwank in straight sets 7-6 (5) 6-4.
In other first round matches, Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil defeated German wild card holder Robin Kern 7-6 (3) 6-2, Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez dismissed fellow countryman Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-2 6-3 and Slovakian qualifier Pavol Cervenak booked his place in the second round after ousting Ukrainian Sergey Stakhovsky 6-4 4-6 6-1.
