The first round of LA Farmers Classic ATP hard court tournament started with matches in the bottom half of the draw. While Paul Capdeville and Flavio Cipolla advanced to the second round, the eight seed Brian Baker was eliminated by his US compatriot Rajeev Ram.
Baker, number 79 on current ATP rankings reached Nice final two months ago, but the 6-7 (3), 5-7 defeat against Ram is no big surprise as Rajeev has been playing some superb tennis in the last few weeks, having reached the semis in Newport. Both of the sets were tight, yet it was Ram who was more composed in their closing moments.
Chilean Capdeville got the better of Russian Igor Kunytsin, winner of Moscow 2008. Similarly ranked athletes played a rather equal match with an end result 6-4, 7-6 (5). It was Kunytsin’s second lost serve that decided the first set, while the second set went to the tie-break. Capdeville won three mini-break points and went 6-1 up. Kunytsin replied with winning four consecutive points, but could not prevent the Chilean converting his first match point.
There was more than one hundred fifty places ATP rankings gap between Italian Cipolla and 19-years old American prospect Jack Sock, and it showed on the court – Cipolla entered the second round with an easy victory: 6-3, 6-1.
Third seed Argentine Leonardo Mayer got a bye in the first round.
