The second day of play for the Kitzbuhel tournament (defending champion: Robin Haase) featured a small upset, with no. 242-ranked Philipp Oswald of Austria defeating the Daniel Brands of Germany, 4-6 6-2 6-3. Brands has now played 8 tournaments at the ATP level this year, with his best result coming in April at Bucharest, where he went through the qualifying rounds to reach the QF. Oswald came up with big serves in the match to score his first ATP win.
7th seed Ernests Gulbis was on the brink of defeat, when he came back from a set down and 2-5 in the second set, to win the next 11 of 12 games and defeat Andreas Haider-Maurier, 2-6 7-5 6-1. Gulbis managed to reduce his unforced error count and play his game, while an increasingly demoralized Haider-Maurier played erratically after narrowly losing the second set. In R2, Gulbis will play Rogerio Dutra Silva, who was up 4-1 in the first set before his opponent Jan Hajek retired (dizziness).
In what was expected to be a relatively even match-up, Simone Bolelli defeated Horacio Zeballos, 7-5 7-5. He will play the winner of the match between Martin Klizan and Pavol Cervenak.
