Two unseeded players went head to head in the other semi, with Julia Cohen overcoming Olga Puchkova in another of the three set matches which have characterised this tournament, eventually prevailing 3-6 6-0 6-3 in just over two and a half hours. This week has been a revelation for Cohen, who has only ever won one main draw WTA match in her career.
Cohen did not have the same result when she took to the court with her doubles partner, Sacha Jones. Later in the afternoon the unseeded pair was beaten by the number 3 seeds, Alberta Brianti and Eva Birnerova in one and a half hours. In the other doubles semi, fourth seeds Valeria Solovieva and Irina Buryachok powered past the first seeds, Nina Bratchikova and her partner, Alexandra Panova, 6-3 6-1 in only an hour on court.
